I am really excited to show you this amazing Liberty boy’s quilt which was been made for the Quilt SOS project by ‘The Lewes Quilting Bees’.
This lovely group of quilters have joined together, shared the Liberty fabric from a Quilt SOS pack and made this wonderful Liberty boy’s quilt. We all get so excited when another quilt comes into the studio. I am delighted that we have nearly enough quilts now for all of the children in Vilnius in Lithuania. We only need 5 more quilts so if you fancy joining late to the Quilt SOS party then do call the studio.
This lovely sewing group decided to make a quilt suitable for a young boy and designed the quilt themselves. Liberty fabric does tend to lend itself towards designing for girls and so they set themselves a challenge. They divided the fabrics and images between them and the result is what you see here. Whoever receives this wonderful Liberty boy’s quilt will be over the moon I am sure.
They chose a primary colour binding which finishes the quilt off perfectly.
The Lewes Quilting Bees are made up of Veronica Greenslade, Gill Nicholls, Anne Commin, Sue Shoesmith and Suanna Burton. I love the design and colours in this quilt and especially loved the little touch of translating ‘Made with Love’ in Lithuanian ‘Pagaminta su Meile’.
I asked the group a little bit about their Quilt SOS experience.
1. How long have you been in a quilting group and how did you all meet?
We met about four years ago when we did some patchwork courses and workshops at a local patchwork and quilting shop in Lewes, East Sussex. When the shop sadly closed a year ago we had become firm friends and decided, along with a couple of other friends, to continue to meet weekly at each other’s houses. Friday has now become a favourite day of the week for all of us ~ a time to share patchwork ideas, quilting advice; sew together, chat and of course eat some cake!
2. What made you join the Quilt SOS project?
Last year I took part in the first SOS Quilt initiative organised by Alice Caroline and loved the experience. This year when I asked the group if they fancied making a quilt together they all jumped at the chance ~ making a quilt as a shared project seemed such a lovely thing to do and we hadn’t done that before.
We decided to try to make a predominantly boys quilt and it quickly evolved into being made up of different images that a child might like…. tractors, dinosaurs, rockets and boats in all the different fabrics. We chose a range of fabrics from the Alice Caroline site and added some primary plain fabrics too. The images and fabrics were divided amongst the group and it was fun to see what people made and what fabrics they had chosen. We thought the nine-patch blocks would add colour and interest and were a great way to use up the smaller pieces of fabric we ended up with.
3. Was it fun taking part in a joint sewing project?
It has been a lovely shared project and we are delighted with our finished quilt. I think The Lewes Quilting Bees will certainly be signing up again next year to take part in this lovely charity event.
