Laura has made another Beautiful Liberty Dress using one of the stunning fabrics from the new classics range. She’s made it using ‘Libby’ from the new Liberty Classics which is a small floral depicting daisies in fun colours. The pattern is one of Laura’s own creations which makes her super talented.
I asked Laura about her choice of fabric and the ‘make’:
“The Libby print from the 2019/20 Liberty Classics collection is a small, ditzy floral with vintage vibes and is therefore perfection in physical fabric form. I fell in love instantly with this sweet purple and blue B colourway in particular and knew it would make an amazing dress. My aim in designing the dress was for it to be cute (as is my general aim when dressing) and, most importantly, casual. Too often when I sew I start with a simple, casual idea and then add things along the way which usually results in me saying “whoops I’ve made another formal dress!”. So, no more of that (hopefully).”
“This Libby B dress was designed to take me from work in the lovely Alice Caroline office, to pottering around the garden, and then out to dinner without having to change anything but my accessories. I think I succeeded for once in actually making a cute and casual dress – yay!”
“I admit to having had much anxiety over the placement of the external pockets. Trying to ensure they were both evenly placed and straight almost had me change the design and go for pockets within the side seam as I normally do. However, I stuck it out and I’m very glad to have done so. I think it is these external pockets that lend a more casual style to the dress – functional and pretty.”
“I picked up a thin, white lace from a local boutique fabric shop a while ago in the hope of finding the perfect project to use it on and I think it works very well with Libby B, here. I placed it on the top edge of the external pockets to create more of a feature out of them and help them stand out. I also placed it on the bottom of the bodice to emphasise the waistline, and on the sleeve, pointing downwards so it created a sweet scolloped edge.”
“This dress style is just loose enough that it is very comfortable to wear, but still gives enough shape to be flattering. I love it so much I think I’ll be making a few variations of this dress in future! Even just switching up the trimming detail, sleeve length, and playing with the fulness of the skirt could transform it into a very visually different dress but with the same bones… Liberty will no doubt be releasing more beautiful florals in their soft Tana Lawn to tempt me into more projects- I can’t wait to get sewing again!”
