Cute Betsy Splash Children’s Dress

Ruth from the production studio has been busy making this gorgeous Betsy dress for her daughter. Ruth talks about her make:

“I had promised my youngest daughter that I would make her a dress a long time ago. We had a look online for patterns and decided on the Butterick B6201 (view D) as something that would look pretty and was easy enough for me to make! As it’s the summer holidays I brought her into the studio here to have a browse through the fabrics. I think it was a little overwhelming and it actually took two visits for her to narrow down her choice to her particular favourite, and something that fulfilled my criteria for nothing directional and nothing that would require pattern matching! We settled on Betsy X Splash from the Alice Caroline Exclusive collection, Halcyon Daze.

“I decided to make the dress a little big as we will hopefully get a few years’ wear out of it. The pattern was pretty easy to follow although as the bodice was lined I did have to look up how to do understitching as I couldn’t quite work out the little diagram in the instructions!  It was my first zip into a garment but it actually turned out well and I was really pleased with it. After initially thinking that doing the lining may have been a bit fiddly, it was useful in the end as it hid all the messy seams! I must give a special thanks to Laura here at Alice Caroline for her top tip when gathering the waist as it made it a lot easier – divide the waist into quarters and gather each quarter separately rather than trying to do the full waist at once.”

“We went into Hobbycraft and chose the trim for the neckline, ric rac for the sleeves, and ribbon for the waistband. As the sleeves were lined I was able to insert the ric rac during construction. I hand sewed the trim at the neckline and ribbon around the waist once the dress was finished.”

“We are both really pleased with how the dress has turned out and now that the photos have been taken my daughter is able to wear it properly – she hasn’t taken it off yet!”

“Now to make something for my other daughter…”
