Liberty English Paper Pieced Hexie Table Runner

Dawn from the studio has been very busy doing lots of EPP to make this lovely rainbow Liberty table runner. What a great way to showcase all of your favourite fabrics and use up all of your fabric scraps too!

“I recently made a full size quilt using Alice’s ‘Snowflake’ EPP pattern (click here to read the blog) and I was left with quite a few of the Hexiform pre -cut shapes. Hexiform is a brilliant thing to use with the fine Tana Lawn as it gives a nice ‘puffy’ finish and as it’s slightly padded I thought it would be good to make some form of table mat or table protector.”

“Since making the quilt I’ve been bitten by the EPP bug so was really keen to do some more. As I had a lot of hexagon shapes I decided to use those, and thought they would lend themselves to a table runner for my kitchen table.”

“I raided my (ever-increasing) Tana Lawn scrap box and started to make lots of hexagons! My aim was to make every hexagon in a different Liberty pattern for the whole runner. I just about succeeded with that using over 240 different designs and colourways for the ‘whole’ hexagons. Where I cut the hexagons in half to make the straight edges I did need to double up on a few patterns but on the whole the runner is made up of a myriad of different colours and designs.”

“The tricky part was trying to lay the hexagons out in a random pattern! I found laying out rows at a time and double checking before I started hand-sewing them together was the best approach. And numbering each row kept me on track too.”

“Over time the runner was long enough, and to finish it off I backed it very simply in a linen fabric.

The end result is a very colourful runner with enough padding to withstand hot cups and mugs and protect the table, but my stash still hasn’t reduced by much so I’m on the hunt for the next project!”
