Liberty Snowflake Quilt

Dawn has made this beautiful Liberty Snowflake Quilt using lots of her old scraps of Liberty Tana Lawn fabrics. This uses one of our patterns (Snowflake Quilt) that combines the techniques of English Paper Piecing and Appliqué. The pattern needs a bit of tweaking so if you are interested in making one please follow us on social media so you know when it will be launched. Dawn tells us about her mini block version of the quilt.

Liberty Snowflake Quilt | EPP Quilt

“A long time ago (in a galaxy far away….) Alice kindly let me have the patterns she designed for her Snowflake Quilt, as I’d been talking about trying some EPP and using up my (ever increasing) stash of Liberty Tana Lawns.

The original designs used 2” pattern pieces, but I decided to use 1 1/4” pieces so I could use up smaller bits of material. Pre-cut Hexiform triangles, diamonds and hexagons were ideal for this project and gave a slightly padded finished effect which works well with the fine Tana Lawn.

I started to make the ‘snowflakes’ whenever I had some spare time for hand sewing (not very often as it turned out!) and so the months (and years!) went by ……..”

“That was around 3 years ago, so with some spare time on my hands (on a relaxing trip to France this year) I thought it was high time to get the quilt finished! Having worked out I needed 35 ‘snowflakes’ to complete the quilt to the desired size, mounting them on 12.5” squares of the background fabric (Liberty quilting weight called ‘Garden Trail’) I soon realised I’d probably be 105 years old before the quilt was finished!!! So I cheated slightly and did the outer squares in pentagon flowers which were much quicker to complete! Luckily Betsy comes in lots of different colourways so I was able to use this design (along with the lovely Liberty Tana Lawn plains as the centres of the flowers), to give some consistency to the outer squares.

As Betsy featured on the front of the quilt she was a natural choice for the backing and binding, and the pretty mauve colourway from the SS22 collection is my favourite.”

“I decided to have the finished item long-arm quilted by the very talented Frances at Fabadashery. Frances helped me choose the thread and design for the ‘edge to edge’ quilted effect – a floral pattern which complemented all the flowers featured in the Liberty fabrics.”

“This quilt was a great way to use up all those little bits of fabric I had in my stash, although I seem to still have plenty left over. Maybe I could try another quilt – after all EPP is rather addictive!”
