Laura has made this rather Lovely Liberty Top from one of our Liberty sale fabrics.
Laura has designed and made her own pattern for this Lovely Liberty Top. She studied fashion and textile design in Sydney, Australia. This is where she learnt to make her own dress making patterns. I asked her how she decides on the final pattern. “I combined all of my favourite elements of the clothes in my wardrobe and traced the main shape around an existing top. The whole point of pattern making is that you can adjust a style to perfectly suit you and what you love to wear. I chose the ruffles as I wanted to add a bit of fun and feminine flair. I chose the Goosey Gladrags fabric because it takes you by surprise. It looks quite grey and subdued until you look more closely. There are geese actually wearing clothes which is unexpectedly fun.”
To make your own pattern. Long tissue paper is ideal but in the absence of that, Laura used A4 white sheets and stuck them together. This works just as well.
Showing the detail of the ruffled placket. “I wasn’t sure of how much to gather the fabric in to make the perfect ruffle so I laid it out and adjusted it as I went along.”

She top stitched the sleeve ruffle in place whilst catching the lining. This was the very last step in the make and it’s the point where she dared to get excited.
Ta da! The finished top. It’s so super cute. There’s a tie at the back to ruffle the back slightly. This gives a lovely finish to the top and makes it super comfortable as it’s not too tight fitting.
Laura has also finished the blouse off with some really pretty pearl buttons. We love it and hope that it inspires you to get sewing.
