Valentine Button Heart Cushion

Dawn from the studio has made this adorable Valentine Button Heart cushion.  I love the combination of vintage buttons with Liberty fabric in this project and it looks like a fairly quick and simple make too.

I asked Dawn about the project:

Where did you find the inspiration to make this cushion?

“I had already made the button heart piece with some crafting friends and it seemed a good idea to make it into a cushion using Mitsi on the back.  Like most sewing fanatics I had a plentiful supply of buttons but never seemed to use any of them, so I had the idea of trying to create a simple heart shape by sewing them onto some backing fabric.”

“Mitsi is one of my favourite Liberty designs and the Hot Pink colourway is a great Valentine choice as there are both red and pink hues in it. It matched well with the variety of colours in the buttons I used for the heart on the front of the cushion, and I happened to have just enough material in my stash left over from another project.”

“I strengthened the fabric with some iron on interfacing, outlined a heart shape using an air-erasable marker and popped it into an embroidery hoop – then I got stitching!  The shape built up fairly quickly and it was fun to search through the button tin for just the right ones.  As I did it with friends (back in the day when we were allowed to meet up) we were able to share and exchange buttons to each get the desired effect.  We all did the heart shape (thinking it would perhaps be the easiest) but you could do any shape at all!”

How long did it take you to sew the buttons on?
“It took a few hours to complete the button heart – but it was a great project to pick up and put down whenever time permitted.  I like the fact that the buttons have a new lease of life and not shut away in a tin!”

Thank you for sharing your beautiful Valentine Button Heart Cushion with us.  There’s a sneaky peak of the Suffolk Puff cushion in the picture above – the next project on the blog in a few days.
